My cousin has been having car issues. Its a 2009 corolla with a rocking 4 banger. He had been having trouble starting the car on the occasion and it would idle rough like it was going to stall out. well the other day it just wouldn;t start. First thought was spark plugs bu that didn;t help. Second thoughts were dirty throttle body or MAF sensor. Not wanting to deal with it he had AAA tow it to the dealer since he needed (5) recalls to be attended to as well. Well the called him back and said that Autozone had specified the wrong spark plugs and that his rings were junk and now needs a new engine. He was pretty good about oil changes and maintenance. 150k miles. compression test come back low - 110,110,100,115 then they put oil in it and it was up around 150-160.
does any of this make sense?

A 150,000 mile Corolla is just getting broken in... That seems really weird.

That’s... quite suspect. Shitty.

wrong plugs cause bad rings? um...

Uh, no, it doesn’t.
They COULD be right, it may need new rings. Does it smoke? At start up or when running? Did they do a leak down test? Or at least a compression test? Just saying “new engine” without evidence is a colossal dick move to me.
I am more inclined to think that it’s a problem with the IAC valve. Maybe even a filthy air filter? Did you get in to it at all?

compression was low

i think they are two separate issues. the hard start/bad idle was first and he thought new plugs were the cause of that.

How low? Across the board or just one hole?

inb4 someone suggests “LOL LS1 SWAP BRO”

i already did as soon as he told me what the dealer said

no smoke and it was all cylinders, not sure about how low it was, they just said low
edit:
110,110,100,115
then they put oil in it and it was up around 150-160

I am not familiar with the 1.8L Toyota but to me those numbers are on the lower side, maybe unacceptable.

Sounds like 2 separate issues. With those compression numbers, everything is within 10% of each other so I wouldn’t think that it would cause a rough idle. Even if the wrong plugs were used for a couple of days, it shouldn’t make enough difference to do any real damage short of being WAY too hot and causing detonation.

Burn it. Collect insurance.

nope i dont think the plugs were in for more than a day. the issue was happening before the plugs, he thought the plugs might correct it.

So he's probably going to trade it in on a new car? Haha

Yeah, that looks like bad rings. No the spark plugs didn’t cause it. I betya he was burning oil ahead of time.

That’s pretty damn low.
... that was my contribution to the discussion, I guess.

Agreed - how can the wrong plugs do that much damage? Don’t they all operate in pretty much the same way?

It’s actually above minimum spec for the 1.8L:
Minimum Compression Pressure ....... 142 psi (10.0 kg/cm)
The one that’s down 15 from the other is a problem though-
Maximum Variation Between Cylinders .. 14 psi (1.0 kg/cm)
(EDIT: these may be old numbers just realized my source was for a much older 1.8L)
Spark plugs didn’t cause this or play any part of it. Seems odd for a 1.8 toyota to have bad rings at that mileage but I mean...it’s possible. Was it low on oil when it went in? Can you tell if it’s burning any?

Try having the throttlebody and plate cleaned while the battery is disconnected (which is important as you want the ECM to do a ‘relearn’).

Also look at cleaning the MAF sensor. And failing that, look into checking the intake manifold gasket:

typically below 85 is the criteria for failure, the difference between 100 to 115 is what concerns me.

Let the car Idle for 30 minutes. 15 with the A/C off and 15 with the A/C at full blast. This is supposed to reprogram the ECU, because when the battery is disconnected the ECU is reset and assumes it’s a new car. My 2008 mazda 3 is also idling rough and this somewhat fixed the problem.
